How does mobile broadband / mobilt bredbånd work?
High-speed internet has completely revolutionized our day to day lives, so much so that it’s almost impossible to imagine what life would be like if we had to go without high-speed internet – and many of us can’t remember what it was like when this technology didn’t exist in the first place!
Broadband internet has made high-definition video streaming, mobile applications, cloud computing, online gaming, online banking, and so much more possible. Daily life is significantly impacted by everything that broadband internet has to offer, and now that mobile broadband internet is so widely of the life has become even more intertwined with the web and will likely become more connected going forward.
All the same, not everyone is exactly sure of what mobile broadband is, how it works, and why it is so advantageous to leverage a mobile broadband plan these days. Hopefully we are able to shine a little bit of light on the subject for you going forward!
What is mobile broadband, anyway?
Cellular phones really helped to reshape the world of communication in the early 1990s and 2000, but it wasn’t really until the iPhone was first released in 2007 that everything changed completely and cell phones became “smart phones”, capable of taking advantage of mobile broadband technology.
Based off of the same kind of cellular protocols that allow us to contact anyone from our phone almost regardless of where we are on the planet, mobile broadband technology uses the same radio wavelengths and signals as cellular towers but allows for high-speed connections across these cellular tower “hotspots” just like you’d enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
A number of different mobile broadband technologies have come and gone over time, but the technologies that appear to be “here to stay” are third generation networks (3G) and the new extreme high-speed mobile networks known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks that have almost no cap whatsoever on the mobile broadband speeds they are going to be able to offer moving forward.
How do I connect to a mobile broadband network?
All you need to do to take full advantage of everything that a mobile broadband network has to offer is to simply have a device capable of utilizing the cellular signals in your area and an active account that grants you access to this high-speed technology.
Every single smart phone available on the market today – and every single phone since about 2008 or so – is able to interface directly with 3G and LTE networks. On top of that, it’s possible to purchase mobile broadband cards that can be inserted directly into your laptop, purchase tablets and other devices with mobile broadband connections built right in, and you can even order routers that utilize mobile broadband connections to provide your home – or anywhere else, for that matter – with a Wi-Fi network built on the back of high-speed broadband mobile internet as well.
This opens up a tremendous amount of capability as far as new devices are concerned, but it also makes it effortless to connect to the web almost anywhere and everywhere you may find yourself. Cellular towers are going up at incredible rates, and every new tower only expands the reach of the cellular network while improving security, connectivity, and speed across the board as well.
Mobile broadband is a game changing technology for sure, and is likely to be the future of broadband internet connectivity going forward. It allows for incredibly inexpensive infrastructure, almost effortless maintenance, and the kind of “always on” and wireless connection that our modern world almost demands these days.
